Mr. Henderson served as Chair and CEO of SunCoke Energy, Inc., the largest U.S. producer of metallurgical coke for the steel industry, from December 2010 until his retirement in December 2017. From January 2013 through December 2017, he was also Chair and CEO of SunCoke Energy Partners GP LLC, the general partner of SunCoke Energy Partners, L.P. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Sunoco, Inc., from September 2010 through the completion of SunCoke Energy’s public offering and separation from Sunoco in July 2011.
Prior to Sunoco/Sunoco Energy, Mr. Henderson was President and CEO of General Motors (GM) from March 2009 until December 2009. During his more than 25-year career at GM, he held several senior leadership roles, including President and Chief Operating Officer, Vice Chair and Chief Financial Officer, Chair of GM Europe, President of GM Asia Pacific, and President of GM Latin America, Africa and Middle East. He also served as a consultant to GM in 2010 prior to joining Sunoco, and to AlixPartners LLC in 2010.
In May 2013, Mr. Henderson joined the Board of Directors of Marriott International, where he serves as Chair of the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and Lead Independent Director, as well as a member of the Audit Committee. He joined the Board of Directors of Adient plc in October 2016 and currently serves as non-executive Chair. He served as interim President and CEO of Adient from June to September 2018.
Mr. Henderson previously served on the boards of Compuware Corporation, Horizon Global Corporation, and Arconic Corporation (as non-executive Chair). He also served as a Trustee of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (including as Chair from 2021–2025). He is a Principal of the Hawksbill Group and an operating partner of Atlas Holdings (and Atlas Innovation), where he serves on the boards of US Farathane and RESRG (as Board Chair).
